What happens when you give hundreds of student teams across the world an AdWords online advertising budget of US$250 and three weeks to help a local business improve their marketing campaign? You get the annual Google Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC) which is now in its fifth and most competitive year yet.
A total of 11,000 students from 86 countries/territories participated in this year’s challenge, and students from universities in Sub Saharan Africa were not left out.
About 47 student teams from 26 universities in 10 countries in Sub Saharan Africa joined their peers from all over the world in this year’s challenge.
The results are now in. Eight student teams from 4 universities in Sub Saharan Africa made it to the top 60 teams in the world. Of the eight African teams, two are among the 15 teams in the world that were ranked as Finalist while six are among the 45 teams ranked as Semi-Finalists.
